For as long as I can remember, getting married in June seemed to be the right thing to do. That is why when an aunt of mine got married in December, I couldn’t quite understand why. Come to think of it, I never understood why people wanted to get married in June either. So where did tradition stem from? Remember that cliché all roads lead to Rome? Well, June weddings can also be traced back to the Ancient Roman times.

For one, the Romans placed special attention to June weddings because that month was the time when they paid special obeisance to Juno, the goddess of marriage. As such, getting married in June was deemed lucky. We all know how the gods of the ancient times were very much involved in day to day living. On the other hand, it was not all luck and superstition that had it going for June weddings. It also had a practical aspect to it. If a couple got married in June, it meant that if the wife conceived, she would give birth before harvest time. This translated to the fact that she would be well enough to work the fields come harvest time.

There you are – the nitty gritty stuff about June weddings. With time, however, these reasons faded into the background. People of the modern times merely held on to the tradition that June is a good time to get married and that there is no other more romantic month than this. I have been trying to come up with modern reasons for June being the wedding month. I have done research and racked my brains but to no avail. Unfortunately, I think it is all based on the age old tradition which many do not know about now.

No matter what the reason may be though, June weddings are still quite popular today (though probably not as much as before). With the month of June just peeking around the corner, countless couples are probably getting ready for their own wedding. Their reasons may vary but the fact remains that June is still the prime month for weddings. In the next few posts, let us look into different topics relating to weddings held in June. Though it may be a bit late to plan your own wedding for this June, it will only be a matter of time till the next June comes around.

U.S. consumers purchase approximately 7 billion greeting cards each year, generating nearly $7.5 billion in retail sales.
More than 90 percent of all U.S. households buy greeting cards, with the average household purchasing 30 individual cards in a year.
The average person receives more than 20 cards per year, about one-third of which are birthday cards.
Greeting cards range in price from 50 cents to $10, although counter cards typically cost between $2 and $4. Cards featuring special techniques, intricate designs and new technologies are at the top of the price scale.
The exchange of greeting cards is one of the most widely accepted customs in the U.S. There are cards for virtually any occasion or relationship, and they are widely available. Approximately 100,000 retail outlets around the country carry greeting cards.
Women purchase more than 80 percent of all greeting cards.
Although women are more likely than men to buy several cards at once, men generally spend more on a single card than women.
There are two categories of greeting cards -- Seasonal and Everyday. Total card sales are split approximately 50-50 between the two types.

The most popular Everyday cards are Birthday (60%), Anniversary (8%), Get Well (7%), Friendship (6%), and Sympathy cards (6%).

The most popular Seasonal cards are Christmas (60%), Valentine's Day (25%), Mother's Day (4%), Easter (3%), and Father's Day (3%) cards.
There are an estimated 3,000 greeting card publishers in the U.S., ranging from small family-run organizations to major corporations. GCA-member publisher companies account for approximately 95 percent of industry sales.
Nine out of 10 Americans say they look forward to receiving personal letters and greeting cards because cards allow them to keep in touch with friends and family and make them feel they are important to someone else.
Although e-mail, text messaging and phone calls are valued by Americans for helping them communicate with family and friends, the majority of Americans say they prefer the old-fashioned handwritten card or letter to make someone feel truly special.

History of the Greeting Card

The custom of sending greeting cards can be traced back to the ancient Chinese, who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year, and to the early Egyptians, who conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls.

By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Year’s greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.

By the 1850s, the greeting card had been transformed from a relatively expensive, handmade and hand-delivered gift to a popular and affordable means of personal communication, due largely to advances in printing and mechanization, as well as the 1840 introduction of the postage stamp.

The first known published Christmas card appeared in London in 1843, when Sir Henry Cole hired artist John Calcott Horsley to design a holiday card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances.

Although the first known valentine card can be traced back to 1415, it wasn’t until the early 1800s and the Penny Post that they became popular and affordable. Esther Howland, a young woman from Massachusetts, was the first regular publisher of valentines in the United States. She sold her first handmade valentine in 1849, eventually establishing a successful publishing firm specializing in the elaborately decorated cards.

The American Greeting Card

Louis Prang, a German immigrant who started a small lithographic business near Boston in 1856, is generally credited with the start of the greeting card industry in America.

Within ten years of founding his firm, he had perfected the color lithographic process to a point where his reproductions of great paintings surpassed those of other graphic arts craftsmen in both the U.S. and Great Britain. In the early 1870s, Prang began publishing deluxe editions of Christmas cards, which found a ready market in England. In 1875, he introduced the first complete line of Christmas cards to the American public.

Prang’s cards had reached their height of popularity in the early 1890s, when cheap imitative imports began to flood the market, eventually forcing Prang to abandon his greeting card publishing business. Between 1890 and 1906, there was a marked decline in U.S. greeting card production.

In the years immediately following 1906, the domestic business climate for greeting cards improved, and a number of today’s leading publishers were founded. Most of the cards by these fledgling U.S. publishers bore little relation to Prang’s elaborate creations. The expressed sentiment was the predominant element; the illustrated portions were incidental.

Following World War I, new publishers continued to enter the field and healthy competition produced important innovations in printing processes, art techniques and decorative treatments for greeting cards.

In the early 1930s, publishers increasingly adopted the use of color lithography, a move that would propel the U.S. greeting card industry toward continued growth and expansion.

During World War II, the industry rallied for the war effort, helping the government sell war bonds and providing cards for the soldiers overseas. This period also marked the beginning of its close relationship with the U.S. Postal Service.

By the 1950s, the studio card – a long card with a short punch line – appeared on the scene to firmly establish the popularity of humor in American greeting cards.

During the 1980s, alternative cards began to appear – cards not made for a particular holiday or event, but as a more casual reminder of our connections to one another. The popularity of “non-occasion" cards continues to swell.

Explosive growth in electronic technology, and burgeoning consumer use of the Internet, gave birth to the electronic greeting card or E-card in the late 1990s. The development of this entirely new medium for card-sending served to further expand the industry, producing new E-card publishers as well as E-greeting product offerings by traditional publishers.

It is assumed that carousing Birthdays in Europe commenced with the originally Iranian cult of Mithras in Roman Empire. It was very rare during the middle ages but with the advent of reformation it was resurrected.

A happy Birthday song is conventionally sung to accolade the person celebrating his birthday. The carnival is followed by the blowing out of candles and then slicing the highly decorated birthday cake. The rite of blowing out of candles has got a significance which is believed by most people. It is a means of wish fulfillment. If all the candles can be blown out with one breath then the wish is believed to come true. The birthday cake is very nicely decorated and it is garlanded with lit candles. The singing of birthday song can be performed at any place, even in restaurants at the delivery of the dessert or the very special birthday cake.

Numeral candles are also used where the number of candles may prove to be a fire hazard. Numeral candles means the shape of the candle will be numeral, for e. g. if the person’s age is fifty then instead of lighting fifty candles only a numeral 5 followed by a numeral 0 will be placed on the cake.

On Birthday, the honored person gets a hug, a call or letters from his friends and family. Kids usually enjoy this special day by playing games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Musical Chairs and hitting Piñatas. Adults prefer to celebrate their birthday privately in some restaurants by having a dinner with their friends.

A tradition of Surprise Parties is also popular. The Birthday boy or the Birthday girl receives no greetings from his/her family at the beginning of the day because a surprise party has been organized to delight the honored person.

There is also a practice of treating friends and that is not always compensated by gifts. Another custom which was commonly practiced by the girls in 1950’s and 60’s in their school days was receiving of a bouquet of flower, ornamented with inexpensive gifts such as candies, lollipops, bubble gums, sugar cubes, lemon drops and many more on their Birthday depending on their age.

Birthday bumps are also eminent; here the Birthday boy/ girl is lifted on air by his/ her friends and family and then placed on the ground lightly so that they don’t get hurt. The number of bumps equals the age that the honored person reaches on his Birthday. ‘Birthday beats’ and ‘Birthday bashes’ are also practiced on this day which is similar to the Birthday bumps, that is the Birthday person gets a number of friendly thumps on his arm or back corresponding to the age he has reached.

Birthdays are celebrated specially on notable ages such as 1st, 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, and so on. One’s golden Birthday is also called as one’s Champagne Birthday, this happens when one’s age coincides with his date of birth, for e. g, if the age of the Birthday guy turns 30 on his date of birth, supposedly 30th of may then it is celebrated as his golden Birthday.

Many girls in the United States have sweet sixteen birthday parties. In Latin America, the 15th Birthday of a girl is a marked one and is traditionally celebrated.

The Birthdays of historically significant people such as Jesus Christ or Prophet Muhammad are usually commemorated as official holidays followed by celebrations in religious places and at people’s home. Some notables, particularly Monarchs, on a fixed day of the year celebrate his Birthday which does not match their actual date of birth yet celebrations are held on that day. Examples such as King or Queen’s Birthday in U.K under British crown; Commonwealth Day, originally called Empire’s Day is on the Queen Empress Victoria’s Birthday held on May 24; in Luxemburg the national holiday is on June 23. These are some of the well known Birthdays nationwide.

Symbolical Birthday gifts are very illustrious which includes various stones depending on the honored person’s zodiac. It is supposed to have originated from Biblical times. The statistics is as follows: January – garnet, February- amethyst, March- aquamarine or bloodstone, April- diamond, May- emerald, June- pearl or moonstone or alexandrite, July- ruby, August- peridot or sardonyx or sapphire, September- sapphire, October- tourmaline or opal, November- yellow topaz or satrine and December- zircon, turquoise or lapis lazuli, blue topaz.

This list is officially adopted by the American National association of jewelers in 1912 and it is currently the most widely used list in the United States and in many other places including Australia and Thailand.

CELEBRATION REFLECTS CHANGE
Changing roles: As technology advances in the workplace, the administrative professional’s role evolves. Because voice mail handles incoming calls in many offices, and computer-equipped managers prepare their own letters and memos, today’s administrative professional performs more administrative, coordination, office management, and database administration tasks.

Changing names: Along with new roles have come new titles. Administrative assistant, office manager, and project coordinator are some of the titles today’s “secretary” may hold. Whatever their titles, administrative professionals are integral members of the team.

Changing images: Professional development and growth opportunities are important to today’s skilled administrative professional.

HISTORY
Mary Barrett, a past president of the National Secretaries Association® – now International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) – led the effort to recognize National Secretaries Week®. The intent was to honor secretaries and other office staff, as well as to attract more people to office and administrative careers.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer proclaimed the first observance of National Secretaries Week as June 1-7, 1952. Wednesday, June 4, 1952, was designated the first National Secretaries Day®. In 1955, the National Secretaries Association changed the dates to the current celebration during the last full week of April.

The name of the observance was changed to Professional Secretaries Day/Week® in 1981 when the National Secretaries Association became Professional Secretaries International® (PSI).

In 1998, PSI changed the organization’s name to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), and the name of the occasion was changed again in 2000, when the IAAP designated the holiday as Administrative Professionals Day/Week. The name change reflects the changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of today’s administrative workforce.

Hallmark began producing cards for this holiday in 1973.
