TRENDS
• Increasingly, companies are recognizing the benefits of letting employees know they are appreciated and valued.

• Cards are being used as tangible, "putting it in writing” tributes to the value of administrative professionals. A card can be displayed on a desk or bulletin board all week, and is likely to be saved as positive reinforcement from a supervisor – especially when a personal message is written on the card.

• Cards that are designed to hold a gift certificate, check, or gift card are becoming increasingly popular.

WHEN
Administrative Professionals Day® is always the Wednesday of Administrative Professionals Week®, the last full week in April (April 22-28 in 2007).

In 2007, Administrative Professionals Day is Wednesday, April 25.

WHAT
Administrative Professionals Day recognizes and celebrates the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, and other office professionals for their growing and diverse contributions to the workplace.

About 4.1 million secretaries and administrative assistants are in the U.S. workforce, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Approximately one percent of administrative professionals are male.

CELEBRATION REFLECTS CHANGE
Changing roles: As technology advances in the workplace, the administrative professional’s role evolves. Because voice mail handles incoming calls in many offices, and computer-equipped managers prepare their own letters and memos, today’s administrative professional performs more administrative, coordination, office management, and database administration tasks.

Changing names: Along with new roles have come new titles. Administrative assistant, office manager, and project coordinator are some of the titles today’s “secretary” may hold. Whatever their titles, administrative professionals are integral members of the team.

Changing images: Professional development and growth opportunities are important to today’s skilled administrative professional.

HALLMARK PRODUCT NEWS
Hallmark offers a variety of ways to express appreciation with 36 Administrative Professionals Day cards. Some cards say “secretary” because, according to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP®), about 20 percent of the administrative workforce uses the title “secretary.” Other cards say “administrative assistant,” and some express gratitude and appreciation without including a title.

Cards include expressions of appreciation for the administrative professional as a person with messages such as “You’re a true professional,” “To a terrific co-worker,” and “With thanks for all you do.” Messages also reflect the administrative professional’s changing role and recognize the wonder of multi-tasking.

Sinceramente Hallmark offers 12 Spanish-language cards for Administrative Professionals Day. The card’s message is included in English on the back.

A variety of gifts appropriate for the office, ranging from picture frames to coffee mugs are available at Hallmark Gold Crown® stores nationwide. In addition, Hallmark.com sells Hallmark Flowers bouquets and thoughtful gifts.

HISTORY
Mary Barrett, a past president of the National Secretaries Association® – now International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) – led the effort to recognize National Secretaries Week®. The intent was to honor secretaries and other office staff, as well as to attract more people to office and administrative careers.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer proclaimed the first observance of National Secretaries Week as June 1-7, 1952. Wednesday, June 4, 1952, was designated the first National Secretaries Day®. In 1955, the National Secretaries Association changed the dates to the current celebration during the last full week of April.

The name of the observance was changed to Professional Secretaries Day/Week® in 1981 when the National Secretaries Association became Professional Secretaries International® (PSI).

In 1998, PSI changed the organization’s name to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), and the name of the occasion was changed again in 2000, when the IAAP designated the holiday as Administrative Professionals Day/Week. The name change reflects the changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of today’s administrative workforce.

Hallmark began producing cards for this holiday in 1973.
